South Mumbai

Heritage venues,
South Mumbai.

South Mumbai is gymkhanas, clubs, hotels and old buildings around Colaba, Fort, Churchgate and Marine Drive. Beautiful rooms, and almost none of them built for a modern rig. The work is getting a full system into a protected building without touching the building.

Nothing hangs from a heritage ceiling

A lot of these venues will not allow rigging, and quite rightly — you do not put a bolt through a hundred-year-old ceiling for one evening. So everything is ground-stacked on poles and bases, which changes where the sound goes and how it has to be aimed. We plan positions from the room's constraints first and work the coverage out from there, instead of arriving and discovering we cannot fly anything.

Hard rooms, long reverb

Stone floors, high ceilings, marble and glass: the room keeps ringing after the note has stopped, and speech turns to mush long before music does. We use tighter-dispersion boxes aimed at people rather than at walls, keep the level honest, and tune the system in the room on the day. A hall like this punishes a system that was set up by eye.

The load-in is the job

Service lifts with weight limits, a long carry from wherever the vehicle is allowed to stop, timed access, and a building manager with a list. Add the drive down from Borivali and the only safe plan is an early load-in with time in hand. We would rather be set up and quiet an hour early than still taping cable when your first guests walk in.

Questions.

Yes, regularly. The drive means we plan an earlier load-in, so the system is up, tuned and quiet before guests arrive.

No. Most heritage venues do not, so we ground-stack the system on poles and bases and plan the coverage around that from the start.
